This presentation explores body image concerns in Indian sportswomen, particularly in relation to menstruation and puberty. Drawing on existing research and real-world examples, the discussion highlights the impact of myths surrounding menstruation, expectations of athletic aesthetics, and the role of coaches, parents, and peers. As sport psychology is a relatively new and specialized field in Brunei Darussalam, Fatin’s journey and experiences during her training provide valuable insights into the challenges and opportunities of establishing this profession within the country. A look at the Social Skills of Youth Football Athletes.

In football, athletes engage with various social agents—from teammates and opponents to referees, coaches, and fans—starting from youth categories. However, these interactions can often be challenging due to factors like high expectations, intense competition, and aggressive dynamics, potentially leading to stress.

This workshop explores the critical role of Social Skills in football, highlighting key competencies such as assertiveness, empathy, civility, social resourcefulness, emotional self-control, and affective approach. Through real-life football scenarios, participants will learn how to identify, develop, and apply these skills to enhance performance, communication, and overall well-being.

Speakers Line-up

Dr. Valeria Eckardt is a sport psychologist, family counselor, and post-doc lecturer at the University of Münster. Her research focuses on psychosocial processes in sports, talent development, and stress coping. She translates research for non-experts and works to enhance youth sports experiences for families. Collaborating with parents, coaches, academies, and the German Soccer League, she aims to bridge science and practice in sport psychology.

Dr. Valeria Eckardt

Germany

Payal Gore is a sports and exercise psychologist and founder of Mind on Track, a consultancy supporting elite athletes in India and the UK. With an MSc in Sports Psychology from Liverpool John Moores University, she is pursuing SEPAR accreditation with BASES. Her research explores menstruation challenges in sportswomen. Passionate about applied work across multiple sports, she strives to integrate sports psychology into high-performance environments.

Cesar, from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, is a Master's candidate in Social Psychology at Rio de Janeiro State University (UERJ). A psychologist and researcher at Labrelações - UERJ, he focuses on sports psychology and social skills in sports contexts. His work explores the impact of interpersonal relationships in educational and athletic settings, aiming to enhance athlete development through psychological and social strategies.

Fatin Mejenie is the Sport and Performance Psychology Officer at the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports in Brunei Darussalam. As a trainee psychologist, she takes a multidisciplinary approach, working alongside experts in sports science and medicine. Balancing her role as a government officer, she is dedicated to enhancing athlete performance through applied sport psychology and collaborative interventions.

Sorenya Miller, from St. Vincent and the Grenadines, is a former national track and field athlete turned coach. With a World Athletics Level 1 certification, she trains athletes at ITDAT Academy and serves as a Mental Performance Coach for sailing, archery, and cricket teams. Holding an MSc in Exercise and Sport Psychology, she also mentors Special Olympics athletes and advocates for adapted physical activity and special education.

St. Vincent and the Grenadines

"David 'Dirk' Smith is a PhD candidate (ABD) in sport/exercise science & psychology, with an M.Sc in sport/exercise psychology and B.Sc in sport/exercise science, asp German Association of Sport Psychologists -Sport Psychology Expert, NSCA CSCS and Compete Sports Diversity Leader - SDL. He is a whole mix of things as a practitioner, including professor, mental performance coach, strength and conditioning coach, research scientist, podcaster, sports diversity leader, and so much more.

David "Dirk" Smith

USA

Christian is a sport psychology professional and former national team coach for Standing Volleyball in Cambodia. With 15 years of research and lecturing at the German Sport University, he now works with elite athletes, businesses, orchestras, and special forces. A lifelong learner, he recently earned a Master’s in Coaching, Mediation, Supervision, and Organizational Development to further enhance his expertise.

FAQ

HeySportPsych takes place virtually through Zoom. Upon entering your email address, you’ll receive additional details about the event. We’ll send out all Zoom links for the various workshops, talks, and discussions shortly before HeySportPsych airs on April 24, 2024.

There’s no need for concern. All participants who registered for HeySportPsych will have access to replays of all sessions once the workshop day concludes. We’ll host all video recordings so you can view them later for at least a week. Additionally, if you’re a VSP+ member, you’ll have the chance to watch the videos within the community platform.

HeySportPsych is well-suited for individuals interested in entering or already active in the field of applied sport psychology. Whether you’re considering studying sport psychology, currently a student, starting your career in sports, or already established as an applied sport psychology professional, HeySportPsych offers relevant topics for you.

However, HeySportPsych is not designed for athletes, coaches, or parents seeking specific techniques or strategies on topics such as improving performance, managing stress, or communicating with athletes or children.

You do not necessarily need to possess a robust background in sport psychology. If you are curious about how sport psychology functions, its potential to aid clients in diverse contexts, and what insights you can glean from fellow sport psychologists, please feel free to join us.

While having prior knowledge of sport psychology and awareness of athletes’ challenges may be advantageous at some point, an open mind and a desire to expand your knowledge are all that’s required. Even if you haven’t formally studied sports psychology, you are warmly welcomed to participate in the discussions and presentations.
